What Is KYC and Why Is It Required?
KYC stands for Know Your Customer. Its basically the casino checking that you are who you say you are.
Every UKGC casino has to do this before letting you deposit, play, or withdraw. Its rooted in anti-money laundering law and UKGC licence conditions. They need to verify your identity, confirm youre over 18, and check that your money comes from legit sources. Yeah, it can feel invasive. But casinos that skip KYC are either breaking the law or breaching their licence. Neither is a good sign.
What Documents Are Required?
Three things, usually.
Proof of identity — passport, driving licence, or national ID card. Proof of address — a utility bill, bank statement, or council tax bill from the last three months. And sometimes, source of funds documentation — payslips, bank statements showing salary, tax returns. This last one usually only comes up for bigger deposits or withdrawals.
You upload photos or scans through the casino website or app. Make sure the image is clear, all corners visible, nothing cut off. JPEG, PNG, or PDF. Blurry photos are the number one reason for delays. Use your phone camera — they take better pics than most scanners.
When Is KYC Conducted?
Before you can deposit or play. Thats the current UKGC rule. Most casinos ask for your documents during signup or right after, before accepting your first deposit.
You might also get asked again when you make your first withdrawal, hit certain deposit thresholds, or periodically as part of ongoing checks. If your gambling activity goes above certain levels, the casino may run additional affordability assessments. Bit annoying but thats the system.
How Long Does Verification Take?
Usually 24 to 72 hours. Some casinos have automated scanning that does it in minutes. But if theres an issue with your documents or they need extra info, it takes longer. Weekends and busy periods after big promotions can slow things down too.
Tips for a Smooth Verification Process
Do it straight away. Dont wait until you want to withdraw — thats when the frustration kicks in. Upload your docs right after registration.
Make sure the name on your casino account exactly matches your ID. Have a recent utility bill or bank statement ready. If they ask for source of funds, just provide it quickly — dragging your feet only delays things. KYC is a legal requirement, not optional. The faster you cooperate, the faster you get verified and can actually start playing.
